After having studied Geraetetechnik (technical engineering) at the Technische Universität Dresden he works for the Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (Institute for Communications Engineering) in Berlin as technical designer, eventually in the testing department for circuit layout. In the Ingenieurbüro für Spezialmesstechnik (engineering agency for specialized measurement technology) he meets Jan Popien and Edlef Buettner with whom he founds APE in 1992.
