...after a mathematically oriented school career he studies cybernetics and electronical engineering at the TU Ilmenau. From there he starts working at the Akademie der Wissenschaften (academy of sciences) in the development department of the Zentrum für wissenschaftlichen Gerätebau (centre of scientific equipment design), eventually in a team specialising in laser technology and laser diagnosis.
The unusual times of Reunification ask for unusual measures: Equipped with part love of adventure, part exceeding knowhow in analog electronics and optical sensors Jan in 1992 founds APE – together with Thomas Lindemann and Edlef Büttner. He has never regretted doing so: „I love APE and my work“.
