... asks himself in 1976, what now? His way leads him from studying physics at the TU Dresden to the Akademie der Wissenschaften (Acadamy of Sciences), away from an academic career. In the Zentrum für wissenschaftlichen Gerätebau (Centre for scientific equipment development) the „practical, work of engineering gave him the good feeling of doing something real and seeing that it is needed.“ There he specializes in ultrafast spectroscopy, establishes close contact with companies like Carl Zeiss and academic institutes in the Sovietunion. He also meets Jan Popien and Cornelia Kiecker there. After a short interlude with ultrasound technology Thomas Lindemann, Jan Popien and Edlef found APE GmbH in 1992: „a time demanding hobby, that leaves not that much time for other activities.“.
